This combo rocks:
Airport Extreme + Airfoil for OS X + Anywhere.fm
Once you’ve got all your music uploaded to Anywhere.FM, next get Airfoil for OS X. You’ll have to Hijack the audio from Safari (or Firefox).
The UI for Anywhere.FM isn’t as nice as iTunes, but this (imho) is primarily due to limitations of it being a webapp instead of a desktop app.
For a web-based music player, I don’t think you can get much better than Anywhere.FM. What made it go viral for me (to tell friends about it) was that it only required a username/password to get started. Anything more complicated and it just distracts from the whole experience.
Plus — When your iTunes library is 30GB, loading the entire thing onto your MacBook’s 80gb hard-drive just isn’t an option!

Dude, awesome idea! Thanks for the tip!

Shanti. Any thoughts on MediaMaster?
A couple of days ago PC Mag named them a Top 10 (Non-Google) Web App and the only one in the audio category http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/138634-2/review_the_10_best_nongoogle_web_apps.html
Also Robert Scoble has a very interesting—if long—video with CEO and music industry visionary Neil Day http://scobleizer.com/2007/10/24/future-of-home-entertainment/
Full Disclosure… MediaMaster is a client… I am a big fan and I like to spread the good word. I’m also a fan of my music collection. Check it out here: http://www.mediamaster.com/profile/profile.jsp?uname=barak
Hi Barak,
Thanks for stopping by.
One thing I love about Anywhere.FM where it appears MediaMaster has taken a different approach — Anywhere.FM has the iTunes uploader.
This is handy for several reasons:
* it’s a distinct app that runs on my home PC (which can be using up bandwidth while I’m at work and running unattended)
* it also syncs my existing iTunes playlists to Anywhere.FM
And I just like the eye-candy of anywhere.fm a bit better, but that’s just me.
Shanti… this is a good discussion. Actually MediaMaster has a powerful/useful/elegant set of uploading features built right into the web service… so there is no need to download software. Many people don’t like to have to install new software.
The built-in uploader :
- Can run on your home PC and benefit from it’s bandwidth while you are at work
- Syncs your existing iTunes playlists to MediaMaster
- Gives you the benefit of “Up-To-You” Upload Speeds.. so if you’re very busy doing other things on the web you slide the dialer down to lower upload rate and if you leave your machine (as you suggest by going to work, for example) or are spending time doing offline tasks you can slide the dialer up to full speed
- Remembers where you left off so you don’t have to. The uploader check whether any song you are about to upload is already in your MediaMaster library. This is very powerful for those of us who have multiple mini collections on various devices —you get one master collection
All the best
